But the longer he stayed away from his homeland, the sicker and weaker he became. On doctor's orders he traveled to the Catskill Mountains, where nature inspired him once again to fight for freedom. A writer, translator and political figure, he became involved in the revolutionary impulses of his country and has now become a symbol of Cuban independence. This poem is perhaps an unconventional choice for our edition on fear as it does not speak directly of fear itself. The poetic voice proclaims the power of the pen against the sword, affirming the power of verse to fight and stand again violence. Here, poetic forces combat, and perhaps defend, the poet from bodily violence. Though circumstances might be dangerous, and while the creating of poetic verse may be painful, the prospect of suffering does not impede the poet from his work.
What made the work become the Chicano Movements anthem is the fact that it is a piece that seems to evaluate the Chicanos and their history from the good to the bad. It also seems to emphasize the Chicanos search and struggle for identity starting from the beginning of the Spanish conquest to our modern times. Basically this poem has become such an iconic work because it attempts and succeeds in encompassing as much Chicano history into it and makes no bias choice as it has both positive historical moments and negative, but they all tie back to Chicanos and their history.

The fact that Oscar is Dominican, has dark skin, and right from the first line in named a hero, immediately and implicitly opposes this idea present in both culture and fantasy that black is symbolic of villains. The story breaks the traditional representations of what a hero is and what is a villain by presenting someone who is black as a hero. This idea is something that is not very common due to racist culture in not just in the Dominican Republic but in America. By setting up the novel this way, it began to oppose the idea the blackness symbolizes something negative before examples of this presented themselves.
Even within the very first chapter of the novel, these negative association and thoughts from people are present. No matter who you are or where you have come from, you have undoubtedly heard of the American Dream. The idea that no matter who you are or where you have come from, you can do whatever it is you desire in America. What was once one the main driving forces for immigrants to flock to the new world, has slowly changed over the years, but still holds its value in the eyes of those who are looking for a promising new place to live.
The American dream might not hold the same awe inspiring sound that it once did, but for many generations before ours it was a beacon of hope that helped build the foundation that the United States was built on.
