Many more "temporary" habitants are accommodated by the town during the touristic seasons in summer and in winter. For a long time, winter sport and especially ski holidays were the main reasons for travelling to Zell am See. The clear air and in particular the crystal-clear water of Lake Zell and the quality of the drinking water made the town at Lake Zell more and more popular with summer holiday makers.
As already said, Zell am See is located directly at the shores of Lake Zell and offers a wide range of possibilities to enjoy a summer at a lake in the Salzburger Land. Swimming beaches, open-air pools, the lakeside promenade and all kinds of water sport let you quickly forget everyday life. The ski pistes lead you directly from the mountain into town and the hiking trails start more or less behind the pedestrian zone.
Zell am See is not only a natural region in the vicinity of the lake and the mountain, it is also stands for urban flair, sophisticated shopping experience and culinary highlights. The town has a long history. The many beautiful old houses tell about the town's history. The occassional look up while strolling through the town is definitely worth it. Many of the runs here are easy to medium and can be found in a relatively smooth area circled by imposing peaks. The experienced can also find plenty of opportunities on the glacier, but off-piste skiing is discouraged in most places here in the interests of environmental protection.
Beginners heading to Zell am See can learn in safety on the slopes of the Maiskogel Mountain, which is a particularly good place for families. Snowboarders will enjoy the terrain park at the Gipfelbahn, while the Kitzsteinhorn Park on the glacier has the biggest superpipe in Austria and a range of other features to explore.
There are also chinese restaurants in Zell. There are lots of cosy, atmospheric huts dotted around the Zell slopes. Another favourite is the Pinzgauer Hutte in the woods behind Schmittenhohe where snowmobiles will tow you back to the lifts. The berghotel at Schmittenhohe is good but quite expensive and very good for apres ski with music being played throughout the afternoon. Apres ski is lively and varied with cafes, bars and discos aplenty. When it's sunny, Schnapps Hans Ice bar outside the Berghotel really buzzes with great music, a crazy DJ and dancing on tables and on the bar.
