What is the difference between kyb gr 2 and excel g
These struts were built to provide an aftermarket replacement that would retain the characteristics of the FE4 special handling package, as the currently available GR-2 struts would have been a downgrade in performance. Theoretically this could help tune out some of the understeer that is built into the w-body platform. It was his opinion that since my goals were sportier handling to give these a try.
He still recommended the GR-2's for original equipment replacement. Cost is comparable to GR2 maybe just a few bux more. I'll report back once all is installed and road tested. Good info to know. Last edited by BillBoost37; at AM. I drink.. He did not recommend cutting or removing the bumpstops for any reason as they are there to protect the strut, but supposedly this one allows slightly more travel before hitting the bumpstop. If you cut the bumpstops too much, the internal strut rod can bottom out and possibly get bent just slightly, allowing it to leak internally and degrade performance.
Maybe some ppl cut the bumpstops too much? KYB part number is SB, so i ordered these as well. Last edited by 92bird; at PM. Good info. Post pics of the struts when you get them in. My brother is looking to replace his stock struts and I'll pass this along to him.
Ill be lowering hopefully in the near future and i was torn between the gr2s and the agxs. RayRay 92 Turbo miata 71 bagged lemans wagon 02 lexus is They were in stock too, unlike the vogtland springs. Very comparable in price to the GR-2's.
I have the struts in hand, i'll take some pics tonight and post them. They look just like the silver GR-2's except they are black and say "Excel-G" on them. Last edited by 92bird; at AM. My vogts should be here tomorrow, struts arrived today. This is a question I've been looking for an answer to. I've read that the Excels are hugely different from the GR2s. If anyone has some hard info it would be greatly appreciated. If I recall correctly, the part numbers we found were also identical between the Excel-G and the GR-2, but the stiffness of the Excel-G left much to be desired.
I'm guessing that KYB decided to soften their entry-level dampers due to complaints from the average customers about ride quality. That or they switched the setup to a twin-tube design. IIRC they both carry the same part number, so when you order from most places you aren't sure whether you will receive a GR-2 or an Excel-G shock.
It sounds like I want to try to ensure I get a set of GR-2s. No kidding? I thought the GR-2 was a mono-tube. I wonder if Rudy Tirerack can get the right ones on a steady basis? Not an uncommon corporate practice. I ordered my GR2s back in July and when I received the shocks I found that the two front were GR2s and the rears were Excel-G or the other way around, can't remember and it's too late to go looking under the car.
I can't comment if the Excel-Gs are any different than when they were called GR2s but I can say that I have no complaints in terms of their performance. It only got better when I added a bit more aggressive alignment, roll bar, and just lately some FM sways. However, it would be interesting to see if there actually is a difference between the GR2 and the Excel-G, i.
Mad Swede. The only way to really know would be to see some test curves. The average person putting them on a Miata probably wouldn't know the difference right away. Although i can tell the difference on mine if i adjust the Illuminas up or down one click front or back.
Although there probably isn't economic justification, the guy to do it would be Shaikh at FCM. Every GR2 I have ever used was just like stock. I can't see a difference. As far as renaming GR2 to Excel G. That wouldn't suprise me.
RIP Silver. You have an NB. Attached Thumbnails. Now, if someone had the same info for the Excel G, that would answer the question. This actually makes a lot of sense from the angle of cost-of-manufacturing as well as advertising cost. Thumper My wild azz guess is they found a cheaper way to make them and are using hype to sell them. Originally Posted by Thumper It's what you know that isn't so.

Hey everyone, It is my understanding the only difference is in the nam and color of the paint used on the housing.
The internal dampers are unchanged. These have been marketed in Europe as Excel-G in Europe for years.
